Peabody to Host First Fireworks Since '98 for City Centenial

What a great way to celebrate the City of Peabody's 100th birthday.

Peabody has not had a fireworks display since 1998, Mayor Ed Bettencourt, Jr. and the Peabody Centennial Committee announced that the ‘City of Peabody Centennial Concert and Fireworks Spectacular’ will take place on July 23, 2016 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School.

The United States Navy Band, who will kick things off before the first city-sponsored fireworks display in nearly two decades.

“What a great way to celebrate the City of Peabody’s 100 th birthday,” Mayor Bettencourt said in a press release.

“There will be patriotic music by one of the nation’s foremost military ensembles followed by a spectacular fireworks show that will light up the sky over Coley Lee Field.”

Peabody has not sponsored a fireworks display since 1998 during the tenure of the late Mayor Peter Torigian. For years, that meant traveling to neighboring communities to get their summertime fireworks fix.

“Fireworks displays have come a long way since 1998,” Fire Inspector Chris Dowling, who will coordinate event safety with the Peabody Fire Department, said. “Concert goers are going to see the very latest in advanced pyrotechnics that night and it should be something truly special.”

The ‘City of Peabody Centennial Concert and Fireworks Spectacular’ is free and open to the public. Limited parking will be available at Peabody High School and the McVann Keefe Hockey Rink.
