Peabody Winter Parking Details

Help out the fire department by adopting a hydrant to shovel out this winter.

PEABODY, MA – The City of Peabody invokes an emergency parking ban whenever snow or ice is in the forecast. During every emergency parking ban, no parking on any street is allowed to allow snow plows to clear the city streets.

Peabody posts its snow emergencies on the city website, on Peabody Access TV, and makes a Code Red automated phone call to all residents. Peabody also flashes blue emergency lights at intersections throughout the city.

The city asks that residents stay around 200 feet behind snow plows when driving, and notes that visibility is usually poor in those situations. Snow plows drive about 15 to 20 mph.

The city does not have an ordinance regarding shoveling sidewalks, but asks that residents clear the sidewalks in front of their homes to keep people from walking in the street.

According to a city brochure, there are 1,800 fire hydrants in Peabody. The fire department tries to clear them after each storm, but whatever residents and businesses are able to do helps. Peabody has an adopt-a-hydrant program that asks residents and businesses to clear hydrants with a 3-foot perimeter around them for easy access during an emergency.
