Vigil Planned at City Hall to Honor Orlando Nightclub Massacre Victims

Mayor Bettencourt has called for a vigil to honor the victims of the Pules nightclub shooting.

The City of Peabody is hosting a community-wide vigil to honor the memories of those who lost their lives in the Orlando nightclub massacre.

Mayor Edward Bettencourt called for a vigil to offer condolences and prayers for those who lost friends and loved ones, and to show unity with the LGBTQ community.

On Sunday, June 12, Omar Mateen, 29, walked into Pulse nightclub, a notorious gay club, and opened fire at about 2 a.m., according to the Orlando Sentinel.

When police arrived, Mateen exchanged gunfire with the officers and barricaded himself in the club. At this point, authorities say he called 911 and voiced his support and allegiance to ISIS.

Police made their way into the club and Mateen was killed in the ensuing fire fight.

At least 50 people were killed and 53 more were hurt.

The vigil will take place at the Peabody City Hall at 24 Lowell Street at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening.
