North Reading Detective Encarnacao Promoted to Sergeant

Sergeant Encarnacao has been a police officer since 1999.

Detective was recenlty promoted to sergeant. The position is a provisional-temporary appointment. After he passes an exam in October, he will be considered for the permanent position.

After growing up in North Reading, Encarnacao decided to join the police force in town in 1999. He was influenced by his brother and childhood friend's father, who were both police officers. He has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a masters in criminal justice with a concentration in police administration. Earlier this year, he was named Officer of the Year for 2011 by his peers.

He is excited about his promotion to sergeant and taking the next step in his career, he said.

"Fortunately, I have had many positive supervisory role models within my organization from which I have been able to learn from, as well as be mentored by, which I believe will provide me with a sufficient base from which to start from," he said. "Although this position is a provisional appointment, I am thankful all the same to those who recognized and had faith in my abilities to successfully adapt to these new responsibilities."

His new responsibilities include supervising a three officer patrol shift and expanding the department’s Crime Analysis and Intelligence Initiative. Supervising may be an easy job for him, given that the current officers have years of experience, advanced degrees and are very knowledgeable in their fields, he said.

"As a Crime Analyst and Intelligence Specialist I will be facilitating and managing the department’s criminal intelligence acquisition, it’s subsequent analysis, and the dissemination of intelligence products to various parts of our organization, as well as to outside agencies," Encarnacao said. "One example would be communicating with area departments and agencies to track a string of residential house break-ins, identifying MO (modus operandi or how crimes were committed) of the suspects, identify possible suspects/vehicles and then to produce Intelligence Bulletins that allow our officers and detectives on the street to have a greater chance at recognizing, locating and or apprehending the offender(s)."

An additional responsibility for him "is to act as a facilitator/communicator between the patrol officers that I have the opportunity to supervise and the administration of the department. In this aspect, the role of Sergeant is as a bridge between the two, making it my responsibility to make sure that the departments vision and mission are carried out as directed by department mandates, department policies and procedures and rules and regulations," he said. "Equally important, I also have a responsibility to the officers I work with to make sure that the administration is kept advised of anything that could impede officers abilities to doing their jobs efficiently and safely and then to advocate for solutions to those impediments."

The new sergeant is married with two sons and enjoys fishing, playing golf, grilling and spending time with his kids.
