Parker Middle School Students Launch Project Bassoon

Parker Middle School students Julianne Mulvey and Alexandra Nazzaro's love for music and bassoons inspired them to launch a fundraising campaign to buy the instrument for the school's music program. The total cost for the bassoon is $4,395, and the pair has to raise $1,900 more to purchase it.

Mulvey, a bassoon player, wants to buy the bassoon for the school so other students can have the same opportunities she did.

"The bassoon has presented so many musical opportunities and scholarships for me such as Festival Youth Orchestra at New England Conservatory, where I played in Jordan Hall, through Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra's Repertory Orchestra I was able to play at both Sander's Theatre and Boston's Symphony Hall," she said. "I love to play the bassoon and make music, by purchasing a bassoon I will be able to share it with others and give them the same incredible opportunities."

Mulvey and Nazzaro have already raised $2,495 by organizing concerts and fundraising. Their first concert was held in late May, in Mulvey's backyard.

"We invited our peer musicians both instrumentalists and singers to play and sing. The concert was a huge success, we raised $700, 20 percent of our goal," she said. "We also fundraised at the school spring concerts, where we raised a total of $1,600."

The duo also wrote a song about the bassoon to introduce the project to their families. Click on the video attached to see the performance.

Their next concert is Thursday, June 13 at 6 p.m. The concert will take place at 32 Red Gate Lane in Reading.
