Reading Resident Runs Boston Marathon for Cancer Research

Glenn Fiore is currently training for the marathon.

Reading resident Glenn Fiore is running his third consecutive Boston Marathon this year with Team Dana-Farber. He also ran the Philadelphia Marathon in 2011.

Fiore lost his mother and mother-in-law to cancer in the past two years. He also lost his father to cancer when he was only nine-years-old. His family members' battle with the disease inspired Fiore to run and raise money for cancer research.

"This is my third year running with Team Dana-Farber and to-date through the generosity and support of wonderful family and friends I've raised over $25,000 in my parents memory," he said.

One hundred percent of the money he raised supports cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

"Marathon Monday is not only race day but a day my family and I celebrate the lives of my parents and mother-in-law, all who were taken from us too soon by this disease," he told Patch.

This year, Fiore's brother and sister will meet him at the 25 mile mark and run with him to the finish line as a tribute to their parents.

When asked for a training tip for others, Fiore said, "Marathon training is both a physical and mental challenge. Listen to your body and know when to throttle back your mileage to give your muscles a chance to rest. Stretch, stretch and stretch some more. Purchase a foam roller and use it daily, your quad and calf muscles will thank you for it!"
