The Reading Memorial High School Rockets dropped a nail-biter to Hampshire in the Division 2 Championship this weekend.

Hampshire downed the Rockets 2-1 in the championship game at UMass-Amherst’s Sortino Field on Saturday, June 20, according to a report from the Boston Globe.

The Hampshire Red Raiders scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning and then added to their lead in the top of the seventh, scoring another run, according to MassLive.com. In the final half inning, the Rockets scored a run on a single from Carly Mello, cutting the deficit to 2-1, but the Red Raiders clamped down on defense to seal the final outs.

Hampshire pitcher Alexis Ferris stranded the tying run at third base, leading to the 2-1 victory, according to a report from MassLive.

Reading finished the season with a record of 22-4. The victory gave Hampshire its first state championship in program history.
