Massachusetts Smokers Pay More Than Most

A new study estimates the lifetime costs of being a smoker in Massachusetts, and only two states and the District of Columbia rank higher.

BOSTON, MA — Smokers don't need to be told how expensive their habit is, but Wallethub is going to tell them anyway. The financial data company released a new study Tuesday outlining the state-by-state costs for smokers over the course of a lifetime. In Massachusetts, that number is a nearly $2.4 million.

According to Wallethub, over the course of a lifetime the average Massachusetts smoker will incur the following costs:

  • $180,193 out-of-pocket costs
  • $1.58 million financial-opportunity costs
  • $274,790 healthcare costs
  • $15,792 other costs

For the typical smoker, those costs average $46,593 per year. Only New York, Connecticut and the District of Columbia had higher costs per smoker in the Wallethub study. The lowest costs were in North Carolina, where smokers "only" pay $1.2 million for their habbit over the course of a lifetime.
