Obituary: Dolores "Dora" N. D'Iorio, 92, of Salem, Lifelong High Street Resident

Dolores "Dora" N. D'Iorio, 92, of Salem, died on Sept. 11, 2014.

Dolores “Dora” N. D’Iorio, 92, of Salem, died Sept. 11, 2014 at Salem Hospital following a long illness.

Born in Salem on Oct. 31, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Romilda (DiCostanzo) D’Iorio. She was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate with honors of Salem High School, class of 1939. She continued her education attending vocational secretarial school and Burdette College.

D’Iorio had been employed with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Head Clerk for many years and retired from the Welfare Office in Salem.

A lifelong resident of Salem, Dora lived on High Street for her entire life. She was a dedicated and faithful Catholic. She was an active parishioner of the former St. Mary’s Italian Church in Salem and the bookkeeper for the late Monsignor Screnchi. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Italian Church Ladies Sodality and enjoyed traveling with the groups associated with the church. She was a great cook and baker who had been known for making many different Italian delicacies by hand and she will be especially remembered for her delicious homemade pizza.

She truly loved her niece and caretaker Elaine and her two nephews and their children. She had many friends and especially enjoyed her “Bonanza Club” friends.

Dora is survived by her niece, Elaine Baginski of Beverly, her nephews, Michael J. D’Iorio of Haverhill and James George D’Iorio of Maine and several great nieces and great nephews. She was the sister and sister-in-law of the late George P. and Helen D’Iorio.

Her funeral will be held from The O’Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common) Salem, Friday, Sept. 19 at 10:15 a.m. Followed by her funeral Mass in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, North Street, Salem/Peabody line at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours Thursday, Sept. 18, from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Dora’s memory to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, 15 Mt.
