'Offensive Smell' May Last 1-2 More Days
The smell coming from the South Essex Sewerage District facility for the past few days will likely last for a few more days.

The “offensive smell” that has been coming from the South Essex Sewerage District facility on Fort Avenue for the past few days is being caused by “treatment process issues.”
The odor may last for another day or two, according to an announcement on Tuesday from Salem city officials.
The problem does not pose a public safety danger, according to the announcement.

The odor started during Labor Day weekend when the facility began “experiencing treatment process issues within its secondary system.”
The air that has been discharged for the facility has an “offensive smell at times,” according to the city’s announcement, which goes on to say that South Essex Sewerage District officials are “working diligently to remedy the problem with its own staff and other professionals.”
