Salem State Psychology Department Holds Colloquium Series

The event is titled '​Why Do People Hurt Themselves? Recent Advances in the Understanding and Prediction of Suicidal Behavior.'

From Salem State: WHAT: Harvard University Psychology Professor Mathew Nock, PhD, will be on campus for the Colloquium Series spring event, “Why Do People Hurt Themselves? Recent Advances in the Understanding and Prediction of Suicidal Behavior.” Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among American adolescents, and rates have begun to rise over the last decade despite increased knowledge and de-stigmatization of mental illness. The event is sponsored by the psychology department in collaboration with counseling and health services, and it is being coordinated by Marcia Weinstein, PhD, professor of psychology at Salem State. This free event is open to the public and media.

WHO: Matthew Nock, PhD, is a leading clinical psychologist of suicide and self-injury in adolescents and adults. His breakthrough work has broadened the knowledge in his field and helped develop efficient treatment protocols. He is currently a professor of psychology at Harvard University, the editor of “Understanding Nonsuicidal Self-Injury, Assessment and Treatment (2009).” Professor Nock has published numerous articles on the topics of suicide and self-injury.
