Alleged Hit-and-Run Driver Shot By Police After High-Speed Chase

South End man reportedly led officers on a high-speed chase from Roxbury to Rockland.

A Boston man was shot and killed by police on Wednesday after leading them on a 20-mile high-speed chase from Roxbury all the way to the South Shore, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz announced.

Along the way, the suspect, identified by several news outlets as 44-year-old Mark McMullen of the South End, hit several vehicles and struck two state police cruisers before being brought down by police fire. He was transported to South Shore Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The chase began in Roxbury around 10:45 a.m. after Boston Police observed a hit-and-run involving the suspect and a female passenger that had just exited his vehicle, State Police Media Relations officer David Procopio said in a statement.

The suspect then fled the area, speeding down Interstate 93 and striking two vehicles, police said. Neither driver was seriously injured.

The chase came to a halt near an exit ramp on Route 3 in Rockland after the suspect allegedly refused to surrender and struck an unmarked police vehicle head-on before being killed by police fire.

A state trooper was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and released, police said, and at least two Boston officers were transported to the hospital for evaluation.

In a statment on Wednesday, Police Commissioner Edward Davis promised a “thorough and exhaustive investigation” into the use of force by an officer.

The incident remains under investigation by the State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.
