Each year, over five hundred teens give birth in Boston. These young parents are frequently from low-income communities and have very poor social and family support networks. They face the challenges of poverty, community violence, substandard housing, unmet mental health needs, and poor school performance. It is common to see negative long-term outcomes for the healthy development of their babies.
But the birth of a baby has the potential to prompt a change in course: returning to school, finding employment, improving family relationships. A new event organized by Children’s Hospital’s Young Parent’s Program (YPP) and non-profit agencies across Boston is now set to seize the opportunity of this important event to help teen girls and boys change their personal outlook and help them start on a path to a healthy, fulfilling life.
The Summit for Teen Empowerment, Progress, and Parenting Success (STEPPS) will be a first of its kind event in Boston to bring young families and community agencies together in one space, providing a safe forum for teens to expand their knowledge and offer resources to help them accomplish their goals.
