Five Things: Big Sisters Wanted for South End Schools

Openings are available at the Blackstone and Hurley schools.

1. More sun and highs around 80. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph.

2. The Big Sister Association of Greater Boston is looking for South End women interested in becoming a school-based mentor for girls at the Blackstone and Hurley Elementary School. Matches meet once a week for 45 to 60 minutes at the Little Sister’s school or at an after-school site for one academic school year. To apply, visit www.bigsister.org, call (617) 236-8060 or email volunteer@bigsister.org.

3. Mosquito pools in the Back Bay tested positive for West Nile Virus last week, prompting the state Department of Health to raise Boston's risk level for infection from low to moderate. No pools have tested positive in the South End and there have been no confirmed human cases of WNV in Boston this year. The city is putting larvicide in catch basins in Boston neighborhoods to reduce the number of mosquitoes.
