Five Things: Hearth Celebrates 20 Years

Supporters enjoyed comedy by Jimmy Tingle and food from several South End restaurants.

Today is Wednesday, October 12. Here are five things you need to know.

1. Back to Fall: Mostly cloudy today with highs in the lower 60s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph.

2. Hearth, a South End non-profit dedicated to ending homelessness among elders, hosted a 20th anniversary celebration last week at the Villa Victoria Center for the Arts. South Ender Sherry Walker and her sister, Ellen Walker, and mother, Leila Walker (pictured above), volunteered their time at event, which featured comedian Jimmy Tingle and food from South End restaurants.

3. The Pilot Block Neighborhood Association will be meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the South End Branch Library. On the is discussion of a restaurant at 655 Tremont Street. Neighbors have expressed opposition to the proposal, which would require approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals.

5. Boston Police report 141 individuals were arrested Tuesday morning and charged with unlawful assembly or trespassing during Occupy Boston protests near Dewey Square. Police cited the protesters' expansion of their tents onto a second portion of land on the Greenway as the impetus for the arrests. In a statement, the department denied the use of excessive force in arresting the individuals:

"Although our officers faced active resistance from protestors including being spit on, our officers maintained a respectful, professional and proportional posture."

Any individuals concerned about their interactions with police are invited to submit a report. No complaints had been received as of Tuesday afternoon, police reported.
