Five Things: South End Chef on 'Chopped'

Teranga Chef Marie-Claude Mendy will compete for $10,000 on the food network's hit television show tonight.

1. Another beautiful day, although a little cloudier. Forecasts are calling for mostly sunny skies with highs in the lower 80s, winds 5 to 10 mph.

2. The South End is home to another culinary television star...Teranga chef Marie-Claude Mendy will compete for $10,000 on the food network's 'Chopped' tonight at 10 p.m. Stop by the Washington Street restaurant for a viewing party starting at 6 p.m. and enjoy a three-course dinner featuring dishes she cooked on the show.  Reservations recommended, three course dinner is $30.

3. The Better Business Bureau issued a warning to be aware of door-to-door salesmen tricking people into paying hundreds of dollars for multi-year subscriptions to magazines. "Oftentimes, the door knocking presentations are so slick that consumers aren't even aware that they have bought several magazine subscriptions until they receive the bill," the warning says.

4. Tonight, head over to Luis Tiant Field in Peters Park for Game 2 of the Second Annual North 2 South Baseball Classic, sponsored by State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz. The game, which starts at 6 p.m., features all-star players from the North End and South End youth baseball leagues.

“As a youth baseball coach for the previous eight years, I am proud to be having an event like this," Michlewitz said in a press release. "Last year was a big success and we hope to build upon that this year.”

5. The Charles River, once immortalized in the Standell’s rock and roll classic as the epitome of “Dirty Water,” is a finalist for the International Riverprize, the world’s most prestigious environmental award, the Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) announced today. The winner, announced in September, receives a $250,000 cash award and a $100,000 grant to share its river restoration expertise with another river.
