Five Things: Students Graduate from Summer Careers Program

Over 100 teens participated in the summer enrichment program, which sought to introduce Boston teens to health care careers.

2. Over 100 Boston teens graduated from the Boston Public Health Commission’s Summer Enrichment Program earlier this month. The program offered job shadowing opportunities for 80 students at the Boston University Medical Center, Boston Medical Center and other Boston health care institutions. Executive Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer called the program "a unique opportunity to introduce Boston students to health careers."

“Experience is the best teacher, and it’s been a two-way street," she said. "We’ve also learned an awful lot from the students...about how to engage teens in the public health discourse.”

3. Good news for the leadfooted: The number of speeding tickets handed out across the state has dropped by more than a third since 2008. Officials blame cash strapped police forces who have been forced to cut back on traffic details to focus on crime.
