A mother and her infant child were attacked Friday morning, police say.

Police are investigating what appears to be an unprovoked attack on a mother walking her infant child on Rutland Street late Friday morning.

Officers responded to the area of 48 Rutland Street around 11:52 a.m., shortly after a suspect stabbed a sharp object resembling a box cutter into the victim’s side and demanded money, a report states.

The victim refused and fought back, police said, at which point the suspect fled on foot along Shawmut Avenue toward West Concord Street.
