Suspect in South End Rape Arrested, Identified: Police

Alleged assailant previously imprisoned for similar offense, apparently cut GPS tracking bracelet, according to Boston Police Commissioner.

BOSTON, MA — A suspect has been arrested connection to a reported rape early Monday morning in the South End.

Speaking to reporters, Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said 31-year-old Eduardo Rodriguez, of Boston, was arrested Tuesday afternoon after an exhaustive search that included all his known addresses. He was found near Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard.

Rodriguez allegedly approached a woman walking near Greenwich Park and Claremont Street around 1 a.m. Police on Monday said the suspect told her he had a knife, and forced her to walk to the area of Carter Playground, where he sexually assaulted her. Evans said Tuesday the victim was raped.

"I'm sure she's traumatized," he told reporters. "I just want to thank her very much for coming forward to help us get this dangerous felon off the street."

According to Evans, Rodriguez has served time for a similar offense, and was let out of prison in December. He was wearing a GPS bracelet, which police believe he cut off.

"That's why we weren't able to locate him as quickly as possible," Evans said.

Detectives' investigation into how the incident happened remains "very active," the police commissioner said.

Rodriguez will be arraigned in Roxbury Court Wednesday on charges of Aggravated Rape, Indecent Assault and Battery, Armed Robbery, Intimidation of a Witness and Aggravated Kidnapping.
