U.S. Senate Candidate Tom Conroy Visits the South End

Conroy is walking over 600 miles as part of his campaign.

U. S. Senate candidate Tom Conroy will be in various locations around the South End today and tomorrow as part of a unique campaign that has taken him over 600 miles – all on foot.

Conroy set out from his Wayland, MA home on July 2 and plans to conclude his epic stroll this weekend on the Boston Common. An itinerary sketched out ahead of time placed Conroy all over the state, from Gloucester to Cape Cod to North Adams to Springfield, where he helped with ongoing tornado clean up.

A Google map on his campaign website tracked Conroy’s process across the state and back and listed his scheduled stops at various cafes, restaurants and community centers. Residents were encouraged to come and share their thoughts.

This walk is “a wonderful opportunity for me to hear the voices of Massachusetts residents and listen to the issues they care about,” said Conroy. “I want to hear their views on the challenges we must overcome, and their ideas for the solutions we must pursue.”

Conroy will be greeting commuters at Ruggles Station this morning and then stopping by The Buttery from 3 to 3:30. At 3:45, he’ll walk over to to greet residents until 4:15. On Saturday, Conroy will visit from 8 to 9 a.m. Members of the public are welcome to approach Conroy and share their thoughts and concerns at any of his stops.

This isn’t the first time Conroy, a democrat, has gotten exercise while campaigning. While running for state representative in 2006, Conroy ran over 300 miles while visiting 4,000 households in Lincoln, Sudbury and Wayland. He won the election and is now in his third term as the representative for Middlesex’s 13th District.

“My perseverance and conviction helped me earn the trust, confidence, and ultimately the vote of my constituents on the path to victory,” he said. “I hope to accomplish this with all Massachusetts residents on my Town to Town walk."

"I believe that, at the conclusion of the journey, I will be in a position to represent the people of Massachusetts better than any other candidate running for the U.S. Senate seat," he added.

Conroy is hoping to unseat current U.S. Senator Scott Brown. He will be joined in that effort by City Year co-founder Alan Khazei, environmentalist Robert Massie, Newton Mayor Setti Warren and immigration attorney Marisa DeFranco.
