Free Tax Prep Help for Eligible Stoneham Seniors

Five things about Stoneham you need to know to start off your day.

Five things to know today, Tuesday, March 26, 2013:

1. Is that you, spring? Temperatures are getting a little more seasonal. Mostly sunny today with a high near 47, according to the National Weather Service. Northwest wind 11 to 13 mph. Tonight, mostly clear with a low around 32. West wind around 7 mph.

2. Free tax prep for eligible seniors. The Stoneham Senior Center is partnering with AARP's tax preparation service to offer free tax assistance to eligible Stoneham senior citizens. Help is available for simple tax forms from certified tax preparers. To qualify for the assistance, you must have an income of less than $40,000 filing singly or $60,000 filing jointly as a married couple. Appointments are available each Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon through April 9. You must call for an appointment: (781) 438-1157. When you go for your appointment, bring your 2012 return as well as recent water and municipal tax bills.

3. Stoneham Retirement Board public hearing this afternoon. The board meets at 2 p.m. and has a public hearing scheduled for 2:05 p.m. to consider a Cost of Living increase effective July 1, 2013 for all eligible retirees of the Stoneham Contributory Retirement System.

4. Council on Aging meets. The council meets at 3 p.m. Among the items on the agenda

5. Story time for little ones at the library. Stop in at the Stoneham Public Library today at 10:30 a.m. for StoryTime. This event is for children ages 0-plus mixed ages, and it is perfect for families. Songs, stories and simple crafts for children to enjoy with an adult in the activity room.
