Learn About Towns Under Water—The Quabbin Reservoir Story

Five things to know today, Thursday, April 11, 2013:

1. Cloudy and cold returns. A chance of showers, mainly before 11 a.m. according to the National Weather Service. Patchy fog before 7 a.m. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 47. Northeast wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. Tonight, a chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 34. Northeast wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

2. Learn about towns under water, a.k.a. The Quabbin Reservoir Story. Author, historian and tour guide, Michael Tougias, will be the speaker at the Historical Society tonight at 7:45 p.m. He has written books on topics ranging from history to humor and led walking tours of Quabbin Reservoir and the trails to the lost towns. He will offer his slide show telling the story of lost towns, construction of the reservoir, impact on the wildlife and more. The reservoir built between  1930 and 1939, gave rise to the cities around Boston with seemingly endless thirst while burying under water towns and history miles away.

3. Finance and Advisory Board meets at 7:30 p.m. Among the items on the agenda tonight are reviews of the Veteran's Services Department and Stoneham Arena, along with reviews of Town Meeting warrant articles.

4. Baa Baa Black Sheep Knitting Guild tonight at 7 p.m. Interested in learning something new? Sharing your love of knitting with like-minded people? This group welcomes you to join them. Meeting topics range from guest speakers, yarn shop owners, designers to dying your own yarn. The group's popular pot luck supper and yarn auction ends the year in June. directional knitting: the many different directions you can knit besides the usual top down or bottom up.  The guild meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Stoneham Senior Center. Annual dues $20. Baa Baa Black Sheep is a local chapter of The Knitting Guild of America.
