Legendary Stoneham High School Soccer Coach Jim Carino Dies

Carino, who coached the Spartans for 26 years, was "Mr. Stoneham High School," Superintendent John Macero said.

STONEHAM, MA — Retired Stoneham High School soccer coach Jim Carino, a legend across the Middlesex League, has died, the Stoneham Public Schools announced late Tuesday. Carino coached the boys' soccer team for 26 years, retiring in 2013. He was coaching the boys' tennis team at the time of his death.

"Mr. Carino was a true Spartan!" Stoneham Superintendent John Macero said in a statement. "He was 'Mr. Stoneham High School.' Mr. Carino impacted the lives of so many students, staff and community members."

Carino was involved with the soccer program for more than 30 years, first as a volunteer coach and then as the varsity coach. He led the Spartans to three state titles and was recently selected for induction into the Stoneham High School Hall of Fame.

Off the field, Carino was the driving force behind many of the high school's iconic events. He ran the Carnival Ball for 30 years and served as the senior class advisor, organizing proms, banquets and graduations.

"If there was an event at Stoneham High School, Jimmy Carino was involved," Macero said. "Assemblies, banquets, homecoming, parades, you name it, Jimmy did it."
