STONEHAM, MA — Residents left no doubt in their commitment to a new high school, overwhelmingly approving funding for the nearly $190 million project at Town Meeting Monday night.

Residents must still vote for an override of Proposition 2 1/2 on Nov. 2, but Monday's outcome allows the town to borrow up to $140.6 million.

The Massachusetts School Building Authority will pay for a quarter of the project, reimbursing the town $49 million.

The proposed new Stoneham High would have a pre-K learning center, turf athletic fields, walking paths, a 600-seat auditorium and more. There would also be maker spaces, collaboration areas and a Community Presentation space along with the usual classrooms, cafeteria and gymnasium. The goal is to have a place students and community members can all benefit from.
