Top Ranked Stoneham Football Team To Host Playoffs

Stoneham earned the top spot in state Division 6 power rankings. The team will open its playoff run this week at home.

STONEHAM, MA — Stoneham’s top-ranked high school varsity football team will take the field this Friday to launch its playoff run with a game against Assabet Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Stoneham will host the game, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Stoneham was dominant through this year’s football regular season, earning the MIAA’s number one power ranking spot in Division 6 with a 7-1 win-loss record. Stoneham’s only loss of the year came in late September against Wakefield.

The team then capped its regular season with four consecutive wins, including a 50-0 rout of Burlington on Oct. 27.

A win against Assabet this week would put Stoneham into a state quarterfinals matchup with either Sandwich or Oakmont Regional High School. In total, four games now separate Stoneham from a potential state title.

Off the gridiron, Stoneham has separate fall playoff representation this year on the girls volleyball court and the field hockey field.

Stoneham’s volleyball team qualified for the playoffs with the 32nd seed, setting up a home game with the 33rd ranked Snowden International School.

Stoneham ranked 28th in Field Hockey, securing a first round playoff home game against 37th-ranked St. Paul Diocesan.

The top 16 teams in each football division qualified for the playoffs, provided that they had at least seven games played and three wins. The top 32 teams in other sports made the playoffs under current MIAA rules.

The MIAA had not announced dates and times for Stoneham’s volleyball and field hockey playoff games as of Tuesday afternoon.

The MIAA had similarly not released playoff brackets for boys soccer or girls soccer.
