
This week marks the final one for the Shaw's in Stoughton at 666 Washington St.
Earlier this month, the company announced it would be closing six of its underperforming supermarkets - including the Stoughton location - by August 3, meaning Shaw's Plaza in Stoughton will lose its anchor store, and a 35,000 square foot retail space will become vacant.

Malcolm & Parsons Food Pantry Drive
Drop off any canned goods or non-perishable items at Malcolm & Parsons Insurance Agency's downtown Stoughton office (770 Washington St.) during the months of July and August and Malcolm & Parsons will match the donation.
All proceeds and donations will be distributed to the two local food pantries in Stoughton.

"These are the months when the food pantries are in need the most," Jack Raeke of Malcolm & Parsons wrote in an email. "We have a kiddie Pool set up in our office and hope to fill it with can goods and non perishables. As we did last year Malcolm and Parsons has agreed to match the value of all the donations! THE POOL HAS A LOT MORE ROOM."
***Discussion on Emancipation Proclamation
Dr. Gary Hylander will be at the Stoughton Senior Center this Thursday, August 1 at 1 p.m. to discuss President Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation.
The following is from the Senior Center:
This year marks the sesquicentennial anniversary of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. At the outset of the Civil War, Lincoln’s sole objective was to restore the Union. But as the war dragged on, Lincoln decided to strike at slavery. In the aftermath of the Union victory at Antietam, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Justifying emancipation on the basis of military necessity and drawing on his powers as Commander-In-Chief, Lincoln announced that as of January 1863, all slaves “are and henceforward shall be free.” The Proclamation however, did not free a single slave.
