Discussion on Emancipation Proclamation

Dr. Gary Hylander will be at the Stoughton Senior Center this Thursday, August 1 at 1 p.m. to discuss President Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation.

The following is from the Senior Center:

But as the war dragged on, Lincoln decided to strike at slavery. In the aftermath of the Union victory at Antietam, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Justifying emancipation on the basis of military necessity and drawing on his powers as Commander-In-Chief, Lincoln announced that as of January 1863, all slaves “are and henceforward shall be free.” The Proclamation however, did not free a single slave.
