Gallery: Stoughton Honors Veterans O'Hare and Healey with Memorial Square Dedications

The intersection of Pleasant Street and Lincoln Street was dedicated to John O'Hare on Memorial Day, and the intersection of Park Street and Belmont Avenue was dedicated to Vincent Healey.

On a day when Stoughton paid tribute to its soldiers who were killed in action, the town also honored two veterans who passed away after devoting much of their adult lives to the Stoughton community, following their service in the armed forces.

After Monday's Memorial Day Parade, the family and friends of John O’Hare and Vincent Healey, two longtime volunteers in town, gathered for Memorial Square Dedications.

The intersection of Pleasant Street and Lincoln Street was dedicated to John O’Hare, an Army veteran who served in World War II.

He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, among other honors during his service from 1943 until 1946.

He married Joan (Atherton) O'Hare, who was at Monday's dedication, in 1949, and together they had two children and two grandchildren.

O'Hare spent more than 20 years reporting on youth sports in town.

He passed away on January 16, 2013 at the age of 89.

Meanwhile, the intersection of Park Street and Belmont Avenue was dedicated to Vincent Healey, a Navy veteran who served in World War I.

Born in 1895, Healey enlisted in the Navy in 1917, honorably serving until 1919.

He married Helen (Clark) Healey, and together they had a daughter, and four grandchildren.

An active member of the Stoughton VFW Post 1645 for more than 30 years, Healey was actively involved in establishing the Post's scholarship programs, and was instrumental in helping put an addition on the building. The main function hall at the VFW is named in his honor.

Healey passed away in February of 1985, at the age of 89.

Stoughton Veterans Agent Mike Pazyra presided over both dedications.

Selectmen Cynthia Walsh and Bob O'Regan and Ted Philips from State Representative Louis L. Kafka's office presented citations to both the O'Hare and Healey families from the Town of Stoughton, Massachusetts State Senate and the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
