Markey Edges Gomez in Stoughton in Tuesday's Special Senate Election

Congressman Ed Markey, a Democrat, won the Special Senate Election on June 25, defeating Republican businessman Gabriel Gomez. Markey also won the town of Stoughton.

More than 10,000 people cast a ballot in the January 2010 Special Senate Election between Republican Scott Brown and Democrat Martha Coakley.

But just 4,938 voted in Stoughton - total - this time around in the Special Senate Election between Democrat Congressman Ed Markey and Republican businessman Gabriel Gomez on Tuesday, June 25.

Markey won statewide with 55-percent of the vote, with Gomez bringing in 45-percent, according to Boston.com.

In Stoughton, the results were closer. Markey won by just 122 votes, 2,515 to 2,393 (51-percent to 49-percent).

Gomez won precinct 4, but Markey was victorious in the other seven precincts in town, including pulling out victories by just a single vote in precinct 3 and by just eight votes in precinct 1 (see the PDF posted in the media gallery for precinct-by-precinct results).

Third party candidate Richard A. Heos (Twelve Visions Party) received 15 votes townwide. There were 10 write-ins and five blanks cast.

In 2010 58-percent of Stoughton voters cast a ballot in the Special Senate Election, but the turnout was significantly less - just 27-percent - on Tuesday.

In fact, in 2010 Scott Brown received 5,616 votes from Stoughton voters (to Coakley's 4,466), which is almost 700 votes more than the total number of people who voted in the Markey-Gomez election in Stoughton (4,938).

The lower voter turnout was a statewide trend. Both Brown and Coakley surpassed 1 million total votes statewide in 2010. Markey did not crack 700,000 (as of 10:30 p.m. on election night).

This Special U.S. Senate Election in Massachusetts was held to fill the remainder of former Massachusetts Senator John Kerry's term.

Kerry is now the U.S. Secretary of State. Stoughton resident Mo Cowan is serving as interim Senator until the winner of the Special Senate Election is sworn in.

Since supporting Brown, a Republican, in 2010, like the state, Stoughton has backed Democrats in the last two Senate elections - Warren in 2012, and now Markey in 2013.
