Stoughton Man Killed In Attleboro Crash

State Police say a man crashed into a tow truck on Interstate 95 South.

ATTLEBORO, MA — A Stoughton man was killed early Sunday morning on Interstate 95 South in Attleboro, State Police said.

At about 2:06 a.m., an Attleboro officer was helping a driver with a broken down vehicle when he called a tow truck to remove the vehicle. A short time later, State Police received a report of a crash. At the scene, troopers determined that a Honda Civic, driven by Michael A. Avelar, 26, of Stoughton, was driven into the breakdown lane and into the back of the tow truck.

Avelar was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported. Debris from the crash damaged the Attleboro Police cruiser. All vehicles were towed from the scene, State Police said.

Avelar is the seventh known person from Stoughton or with a connection to the town to have died in a car crash in less than a month. On May 8, a crash on Plain Street took the lives of 38-year-old Angela Goodrich of Stoughton and her finance 48-year-old Michael Luddington of Kingston. On May 20, Stoughton High School students Christopher Desir, Eryck Sarblah, Nick Joyce, 16, and David Bell died when their car crashed in East Bridgewater.

The crash remains under investigation.
