Routine Car Stop Yields Loaded Gun, 5 Illegal Edged Knives

Walpole officers also found a mask and gloves in the vehicle during the stop.

A routine stop for Walpole Police officers Pat Moriarty and Ian Tolland ended up with them taking a loaded gun off the streets Monday.

Michael Dumaine, 39, of 14 Ames Street, West Warwick, RI was arrested for allegedly carrying a semi-automatic pistol without permit and possession of dangerous weapons (5) illegal edged knives, including a samurai sword.

Officers also found a black mask and gloves in the vehicle, according to Deputy Chief John Carmichael.

“It was very clear that he was up to no good,” said Walpole Police Chief Richard Stillman during his quarterly report to the Board of Selectmen Tuesday night.

Duhaime was stopped at 11:05 a.m. Monday when he was observed on High Plain Street and then stopped at the Mobil gas station on Route 1 for improperly displaying of a registration plate and expired registration.

"The officer noticed that there was a Mass. Registry sticker affixed to a Colorado Registration Plate. He ran the plate to discovered it expired in May of 2012," Carmichael said in an email.

“The investigation continues, he may have been involved in some things prior to the stop,” Stillman said. “Hats off to Pat, he did a fantastic job in sensing that something was more than what it was.”
