Amid Heavy Rain, Waltham Officials Monitoring Dam

Water levels at the Moody Street dam were high on Friday.

Waltham officials are monitoring the Moody Street dam after water seeped through the area surrounding the dam.

Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy, during a tour of the dam area on Friday, told Waltham Patch the city would watch the structure. McCarthy walked the area with a Water/Sewer official after a constituent called to report a possible leak.

"Right now, it looks fine," McCarthy said, noting the water level had receded about 4 inches. "Naturally, we're going to watch it."

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, which oversees the dam, plans to inspect the area soon, according to spokesman S.J. Port.

McCarthy and city officials took note of small amounts of water seeping through rocks next to the side of the dam that faces the Francis Cabot Lowell Mill housing complex. Port said the water flowing through the rocks is a regular occurence when the levels are high. McCarthy said the rocks were placed there to keep water at bay after the severe flooding in 2010.
