Black Bears Sighted in Weston

The chief of police in Weston sent out an emergency call and email on Monday regarding some sightings of black bears in the area.

Several reports, including one from WBZ, have since come in that a black bear was spotted Tuesday morning on Ridgeway Road, by the Massachusetts Turnpike. A report from a Sudbury resident said that a black bear cub was spotted in Sudbury on Sunday on Old Lancaster Road, Pennymeadow Road and Hudson Road. WaylandeNews is reporting one was spotted on Monday on Glen Road in Wayland.

Chief Steven Shaw said the sightings should not be a cause for panic,  but that residents should use caution when on trails. His message f0llows.

This is an informational call to inform residents that there have been 2 black bear sightings on the north side of Weston. Towns close to Weston have also had similar sightings. While we urge residents not to panic we do suggest you use caution when walking in or near wooded areas. Eliminate outdoor food sources at your home: secure trash cans, take in birdfeeders and remove anything else that might be considered an attraction for a foraging animal. Our Department has notified the environmental police and they have sent an officer to assist with their services including information on wildlife behavior. 

Once again, there has been a reported sighting of a black bear on the north side of Weston and while we urge you not to panic, please use caution when in or near wooded areas. For more information on black bears go the website of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.
