Bunny Cured of Gastrointestinal Problems at MSPCA-Angell

The little bunny got royal treatment at the Waltham animal clinic, which not only cured her stomach problems but also threw in a pedicure.

A cute little bunny was taken to MSPCA-Angell West in Waltham for treatment last week and luckily made it home safe and sound just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Sunny, 2, had been feeling lethargic and had a decreased appetite so her family took her to the vets at MSPCA-Angell for a check up. Doctors at the clinic diagnosed Sunny with GI stasis, a common problem in rabbits that slows down normal digestive processes.

GI stasis causes water to be absorbed from rabbit’s stomachs which dehydrates the food rabbits eat. The dehydrated food then forms a lump of plant matter that cannot pass through the intestines, leading to symptoms like diarrhea, toxic shock and even death.

But MSPCA-Angell doctors caught Sunny’s symptoms in time and started the sweet rabbit on fluids and medicine. They monitored her progress overnight.

By the next morning, the veterinarians say Sunny had more energy and was starting to eat the hay and vegetables in her cage. Her family was able to take her home in time for Valentine’s Day.

MSPCA-Angell doctors said they are glad Sunny is back in good health and they think she liked the extra attention she got at the clinic, including a bunny-sized pedicure.
