Former Waltham Fire Chief Richard Cardillo is considering running for a city council seat.
Cardillo, who retired in 2011, told Waltham Patch he had taken out nomination papers for a councilor at large seat and that he was seriously considering a run for the seat. It would be his first run for an elected position.
"Am I serious? Yes. But, I have a long way to go," Cardillo told Waltham Patch. “I have a lot to learn right now."

Cardillo, who was born and raised in Waltham, said his experience running a large city department offers him a unique perspective that he could use to benefit the city. Cardillo served as a Waltham firefighter for 35 years. He spent six and a half years as the head of the fire department.
Despite his plans to run, Cardillo said he feels a bit overwhelmed by the rules and regulations he has read about campaigning or any elected office.

"I’m a little overwhelmed with everything I read today. I need to read it again. I obviously need some help. I need to put together a team,” he said.
Since retiring, Cardillo has suffered a health problem. He said he has had both knees replaced and has had to undergo rehabilitation.
“I spent the last year and a half doing that," he said.
Candidates have until June 27 to submit their nomination papers with 50 certified signatures, according to City Clerk Russ Malone. The primary election is scheduled for Sept. 17. The general election is set for Nov. 5.
