Waltham Animal Control Officer Rescues Baby Squirrels

Waltham's Animal Control Officer Deanna Gualtieri rescued the squirrels Friday from an abandoned nest at Elsie Turner Park.

WALTHAM, MA — Waltham’s Animal Control Officer Deanna Gualtieri rescued a family of baby squirrels Friday from an abandoned nest at Elsie Turner Park, the Waltham Police Department said.

A video posted to Facebook shows Gualtieri feeding a male baby squirrel out of a syringe. Waltham police said the squirrel was rescued along with “his sisters."

Gualtieri is not only the city’s Animal Control Officer, but is also a certified wildlife rehabilitator. She is a member of Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Massachusetts (WRAM) and the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA), as well as a co-founder of the Northeast Wildlife Animal Rehabilitation Coalition (NEW ARC).

"Deanna is experienced in rehabilitating wild animals like squirrels, racoon, and deer,” the department said in a statement. "It’s safe to say that these critters are in good hands!”
