WALTHAM, MA — The Waltham Fire Department will begin its annual inspection of fire hydrants around the city at the start of May.

Inspections and testing will run from May 3 through June 4.

During this time, residents should keep an eye out for Waltham fire companies in their neighborhood and as a sign the water is being tested.

"Hydrant testing will consist of the hydrant being physically inspected for damage, all caps will be removed and lubricated, and the hydrant will be opened, flushed and a pressure reading will be obtained," Deputy Chief Andrew Mullin said in a letter to the community.

Testing is set to run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Fire Chief Thomas MacInnis advised people to run their cold water for a period to clear out any rust coloration before using it for drinking, cooking, bathing or doing laundry.

Fun facts about hydrants:

Before piped mains supplies, "bucket-brigades" or horse-drawn fire-pump would supply water to help put out fires. In the 16th century wooden mains water systems were installed, and firefighters would dig down to the pipes and drill a hole for water. When cast-iron pipes replaced the wood, permanent above ground access points were included for firefighters.

In most areas, fire hydrants require annual inspections and maintenance; they normally only have a one-year warranty.
