WALTHAM, MA — A Waltham man arrested after attempting to buy sex with a 12-year-old could face 15 or more years in federal prison following his conviction in a jury trial this week.

Misael Fabian Medina, 38, was indicted in 2022 on charges of attempted sex trafficking of a child and one count of attempted coercion and enticement. According to federal prosecutors, Medina responded to an advertisement offering sex with two young girls. The ad was part of a sting by federal Homeland Security Investigations agents.

Medina agreed to meet for sex at a Boston-area hotel. He was arrested after agreeing to pay $200 for sex.

"Once at the hotel, he met with an undercover agent and confirmed he had the money to pay for the commercial sex act. During that meeting, Medina was arrested and found to be in possession of a box of condoms," the office of the U.S. Attorney in Boston said in a news release.

According to prosecutors, the attempted child sex trafficking charge carries a mandatory minimum 15-year prison sentence, with the possibility of life in prison. The coercion charge carries a 10-year mandatory minimum, prosecutors said.
