Waltham Police Warn Of WhatsApp Scam

Police are asking Waltham residents to be careful about clicking on links and strange sites that ask for passwords.

WALTHAM, MA — Police are warning residents to be vigilant and not fall victim of a new scam after several people in Waltham have reported being scammed on the messaging app WhatsApp.

"Many of the victims are saying family members are having their accounts taken over and then requesting money from other family members and friends under false pretenses," police said in an alert that was sent out Tuesday night.

Police said it appeared that those who have been scammed have clicked on links that "phish" or ask for their passwords, but are not secure.

"It is important to remember to not give out your password on accounts and not send money out to unverified recipients through apps as it is often nearly impossible to get it back," police said.
