WALTHAM, MA — Just in time for some sunny weather, the city's Recreation Department is welcoming back Spring at Prospect Hill Park with a "Spring Fest." The festival, complete with golf and outdoor games, all free, will be from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.

The Recreation department's Spring Fest is not to be confused with Brandeis's spring fest, which was in April. Nor is it to be confused with the High School's annual Spring Fest, which was last weekend.

This celebration will be complete with carousel rides, golf, games and crafts on the lawn and bounce houses. There will be snacks and pizza for purchase. But be warned: bring cash, because they won't accept credit cards.

And the best part? It's free. Head over to Prospect Hill Park's main entrance for the celebration at 314 Totten Pond Rd between noon and 4 p.m. to take advantage of the fun.

If you're more interested in just taking a walk, Prospect Hill Park has that, too. It's situated on Waltham's west side, near Route 128 and has 252 acres of wooded parkland with protected vernal pools and two summits maintained by the city's park department complete with hiking and walking trails. Big Summit is the second highest point in Greater Boston at 485 feet.

The city acquired approximately 75 acres for the park from private landowners in 1893 and then purchased the rest over several decades. The park reached 219 acres in 1927, according to research by Elizabeth M. Lowe. And fun fact; land was eventually added for ski slopes, which were open and used from 1949 to 1987.
