Police: Door-to-Door Tree Remover Gave False ID

A Maine resident allegedly gave Westborough Police a false name after he and some associates went door-to-door offering tree removal services without a town permit Wednesday.

Westborough Police arrested Dutch John Goff, 35, of 122 Temple St., Biddeford, Maine, and charged him with operating a motor vehicle without a license, furnishing a false name/Social Security Number, and interference/delay of investigation.

Police arrested Goff after an Overlook Drive resident reported at 1:31 p.m. that some people in a pickup truck were there offering a tree removal service, Police Chief Alan Gordon said Thursday.

Police had received a similar report from Mount Pleasant Street about an hour earlier, but couldn't find the pickup, Gordon said.

Door-to-door services require a permit issued by Westborough Police, he said.

Goff pulled up to the Overlook Drive residence as police confronted his associates, who received a verbal warning, Gordon said. 

Police checked Goff's driver's license and learned that no license was issued in the name on it, Gordon said.

A fingerprint check at the police station also raised the identity question.
