Town Of Westborough: Congratulations To The December 2021 Employee Excellence Award Winner Shawn McDowell!

The Employee Excellence Award committee is pleased to present this award to Shawn McDowell in the DPW Department. 

Shawn is a 37 year veteran of the DPW, currently in the Highway Division.  In that time, he has addressed the growing, varied, and ever more demanding needs of an expanding growth in population and town development.  “One of the department’s most versatile team members, Shawn is relied upon daily to help resolve our most difficult problems.”  Having “no fear of blistered hands or muddied boots”, he regularly forges through heavy vegetation to locate, inspect and clean out storm water drains and catch basins in order to maintain a healthy ecosystem in town – a critical aspect that most people have no idea of (and which consequently, garners little appreciation).  Shawn takes this trust seriously and readily goes the extra mile when exceptions arise.  For example, while recently cleaning a catch basin on a back road, he took it upon himself to further investigate the sound of a large tree going down in the woods nearby, only to discover that “…the tree had fallen onto three high voltage power lines and (so he) immediately reported the issue” - which National Grid stated saved them what would have amounted to several hours of research to locate the disrupted power line before being able to embark upon repairs but rather enabled them to have a maintenance team on-site working on repairs within an hour of the outage.  Shawn “gives 100% every day in service to the town”.  His “…tenacity and humility are an example to fellow staff every day.”
