Six Weston residents were among the 83 students who graduated from The Rivers School in Weston on Friday, June 10.
Matthew Bigony was a kind and enthusiastic presence on campus. A member of the debate team and captain of the track team during his junior year, Matt excelled in AP Microeconomics. He volunteered with the National Audubon Society and Sons of Italy, and developed an interest in writing and photography at Rivers. The son of Thomas and Lisa Bigony, Matt will attend Lehigh University in the fall.
Charismatic, energetic, and inquisitive, John William (“Will”) Corkin was involved in numerous activities at Rivers. He was a member of the Red Key tour guide program and Heated Lions basketball program, and was one of four seniors on this year’s Alumni Council, acting as a liaison between current students and the alumni body. The winner of the school’s Language Prize for Mandarin, Will traveled to China for a school-organized trip. He also played junior varsity hockey. The son of Doreen Corkin and Steven Corkin, he will attend the University of Richmond in the fall.
Diligent and responsible, Andrew (“Andy”) Gelb participated in Rivers’ student philanthropy group Rivers Givers, which raises funds for local charities. He was the captain of the cross country team and played junior varsity tennis for three years. In his spare time, Andy played in his own band. The son of Nanci Gelb, Andy will attend Lehigh University in the fall.
Driven, loyal, and analytical, Thomas Rehnert was a strong presence in the classroom and on the field at Rivers. He played varsity lacrosse and varsity football for four years, earning an All-League honorable mention for lacrosse. He was also a staff member for Rivers’ literary magazine, “The Current.” In 2010, Thomas went on a service trip to Romania, where he volunteered in an orphanage. The son of Bernadette Rehnert and Geoffrey and Laura Rehnert, Thomas will attend the United States Air Force Academy this fall.
Marc Schoen’s energy and fearlessness made him an intellectual leader at Rivers. He tackled a challenging course load, taking three AP classes his senior year. He was a staff member for Rivers’ literary magazine, “The Current,” for two years and was heavily involved in community service, volunteering at Horizons for Homeless Children for three years and going on a service trip to Romania in 2010. In his free time, Marc is an avid snowboarder and golfer. The son of Scott and Laurie Schoen, Marc will attend Washington University in St. Louis this fall.
Thoughtful and creative, Elizabeth Southwell excelled academically, winning the Otto Alcaide Language Prize for French and the Photography Prize and being elected to the Cum Laude Society at graduation. She performed in many stage productions, including “Romeo and Juliet” and “Burial at Thebes.” She was a National Merit finalist and received the Brown Book Award her junior year. She also earned a first-place prize for photography at the Small Independent School Art League competition her freshman year. Elizabeth was a member of the student philanthropy club Rivers Givers for three years. The daughter of Alicia Southwell and Kirk Grosel, and David and Barbara Southwell, Elizabeth will attend Dartmouth College in the fall.
