Obituary: Flora Booth, Age 90

Long-time Weston resident.

It is with a broken heart and profound sadness that we announce that Flora J. Booth at age 90, peacefully passed away on July 24, 2025. Flora will be remembered for being kind, generous, patient, and selfless. She has left a lasting and positive impact on everyone she met.

She was predeceased by her parents, Audrey Lillian Jones and Robert Theodore Jones, Jr., husband Eugene L. Booth, brother Robert T. Jones, III, and sister Ellen Jones. She is survived by her sister Barbara Wilson, brother Richard S. Jones, and five children: Robyn L. Booth, Quincy, MA;
Eugene L. Booth Jr, Norwood, MA; Arnold T. Booth, Lynn, MA; Edmund A. Booth, Huntington, VT; and Winthrop E. Booth, Quincy, MA.

Flora Jones was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 4, 1935. Flora graduated from Dickinson High in Jersey City, New Jersey. She attended Trenton State Teachers College in Trenton, New Jersey, and she received a Master of Education degree from Antioch University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Flora was an American Red Cross trainer for ten years and a certified CPR Trainer[1] in the Boston Region. When Flora turned 69 years old, she received a Certificate in Gerontology from the University of Massachusetts in Boston.

When Flora was growing up, she helped look after her siblings and her grandmother’s needs. Flora participated in school activities such as basketball, performing on stage in school theater productions, and serving as a Boy Scout Leader in Jersey City. Her basketball talent qualified her to play in a semi-pro basketball league.

Flora began her career at the Weston Public Schools as the Audio/Visual Coordinator, acting as a liaison between team leaders and teachers for the four elementary schools at that time in the 1970s. Flora’s next employment was at Brandeis University, where she served as the Administrative Assistant for women’s sports contests, and she scheduled work-study student employees and intramural activities. Before retiring in 2002, Flora worked as a Human Rights Officer for Fernald Development Center, where she coordinated Committee meetings and advocated for the rights of people receiving services. As a Human Officer, her role was to affirm, promote, and support self-advocacy efforts for the population throughout the Commonwealth. In addition, she developed, organized, and provided human rights training, seminars, and support to approximately 2,000 people in Region 6.

Flora was a community member of the Weston Friendly Society for the Performing Arts. She was a cast member, producer, treasurer, costume coordinator, and, lastly, she assisted in their scholarship program. She was a founding member of the Interfaith Committee Advocating Racial Equality (ICARE), which coordinated the Martin Luther King, Jr Breakfast and provided ongoing support to the METCO Program. Flora was highly involved with St. Peter’s Episcopal Church outreach, and she was a committee member of the 25 Ruggles Street “Adopt a Room Program,” co-chair of the “Pastoral Care Committee, and coordinator for activities for the Older Wiser Laity (Owls) parishioners age 70 and older.

Flora had been an active member in her church as a child and as an adult. She served as an acolyte as a young adult. In 1968, Flora became a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Weston, Massachusetts, where she served as a Licensed Lay Reader, was on the Vestry, served on the Altar Guild, and coordinated the church Acolytes.

Flora enjoyed attending theater events, art events, and sporting events that her children participated in. She also found pleasure in gardening, sewing, and hanging out on the beach with family and friends. She enjoyed knitting gifts for her family and her godchildren, Ella and Kate Schmittel. Flora enjoyed cooking for family, friends, and events. A memorable annual event was visiting Bolton Orchards, where her children would accompany her at the beginning of November to purchase apples for pies. She enjoyed making frozen apple pies that she gave out as Thanksgiving and Christmas gifts to family and friends.

Flora’s funeral service will be held on September 27, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Weston, MA, on Boston Post Road. A reception to follow for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.
