Kick off the holiday season with the romantic musical comedy She Loves Me, Nov. 22-29 at the Weston Town Hall
She Loves Me based on play that inspired You've Got Mail, The Shop Around the Corner
The Weston Friendly Society, the second oldest theatre group in the United States, opens its 141st season on Nov. 22 at the Weston Town Hall with She Loves Me, the holiday-set romantic comedy that Deadline calls the best Broadway musical you've never heard of.
With a script from the writer of Cabaret (Joe Masteroff) and songs from the songwriting team (Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick) behind Fiddler on the Roof, the title She Loves Me might not be as recognizable to audiences as Fiddler, but its premise might. It’s based on the same 1937 play (Parfuemerie) that inspired the classic 1998 Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan film You’ve Got Mail as well as earlier films The Shop Around the Corner and In the Good Old Summertime.
Well before direct messages on social media and dating apps, two shop clerks in a 1930s European parfumerie, Georg (played by Robert Orzalli of Boston) and Amalia (Dana Sullivan of Newton) separately respond to a “lonely hearts” ad in the newspaper. Often at odds at work, they are unaware that they are each other’s unlikely anonymous admirer.

“As these pen pals correspond through the seasons, their love story blooms while the other shop clerks manage their own personal relationships,” said director Brian Higgins, a Northborough resident.
Songs include “Vanilla Ice Cream,” “Tonight at Eight,” and “Twelve Days to Christmas,” so it’s only fitting that performances bookend the Thanksgiving holiday, opening the Saturday before Thanksgiving and closing the Saturday of Thanksgiving week. It’s the perfect outing for families hosting (or visiting) for Thanksgiving.

Weston native Hollis W. Sullivan, now of Waltham, joins Higgins on the production team as music director. (By the spring production, Sullivan’s involvement in the Weston Friendly Society will have spanned 50 years.) Jessica Ober of Waltham is the choreographer and Jean MacFarland of Norwood is the stage manager.
The other shop clerks are played by Kat O’Connor of Watertown (Ilona Ritter), Scott Berozi of Worcester (Steven Kodaly) and Gary Ryan of West Roxbury (Ladislav Sipos). Rick Grenier of Stoughton is shop owner Mr. Maraczek and Nolan Dupont Love of Milton is delivery boy and wannabe clerk Arpad Laszlo. Dillon Longmoore of Waltham, Graham Small and Caroline Granahan of Sudbury, Amanda Atkinson of Arlington, Rebecca Mayersohn of Natick, Sarah McGowan of Holliston, Andy Ross of Medway, Evan Hill and Emily Ultan of Cambridge, Maddie Craig of Charlestown, Cara Siobhan of Quincy, and Bill Campbell of Scituate are in the ensemble.
