Patch Picks: Five Books to Check Out

In celebration of Read Across America on March 2, here are five books for kids and five for adults recommended by the Weston Public Library.

To commemorate Read Across America, here are five "new and noteworthy" books each for kids and for adults for books to read from the Weston Public Library. Be sure to check out their recommendation pages for kids and adults for even more ideas.
Adults

  1. Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult. Fiction. Main character Zoe struggles with infertility and gets pregnant—but at a great cost to her life and her marriage. Includes a CD of original songs written especially for the book.
  2. Bloodshot by Cherie Priest. Fiction. Vampire and thief Raylene Pendle gets involved with a dashing fellow vampire, attempts to locate secret government files and gets embroiled in a situation she doesn't expect.
  3. Deep Down True by Juliette Fay. Fiction. Dana Stellgarten copes with her divorce, a new friendship and dealing with middle school politics in middle age.
  4. Eat What You Love: More Than 300 Incredible Recipes Low in Sugar, Fat, and Calories 
  5. The Bedside Baccalaureate: A Handy Daily Cerebral Primer to Fill in the Gaps, Refresh Your Knowledge & Impress Yourself & Other Intellectuals by David Rubel. Non-fiction. Brush up on your general knowledge skills with this book.

Kids

  1. Layla, Queen of Hearts by Glenda Millard. Fiction. Layla meets elderly Miss Amelie and soon learns she has some memory problems. Layla helps Miss Amelie and learns something about the healing power of friendship.
  2. The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place: Book II: The Hidden Gallery by Maryrose Wood. Fiction. Under the guidance of Miss Penelope Lumley, three Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place go to London and learn they are cursed. 
  3. How Lamar's Bad Prank Won a Bubba-Sized Trophy by Crystal Allen. Fiction. Lamar Washington, age 13, is a skilled bowler but less so with the girls. When a prank goes bad, he screws up his brother's chances at college and his own chances for a relationship.
  4. Freedom Stone by Jeffrey Kluger. Fiction. A young slave girl fights to clear her father's name after he is killed in the American Civil War.
  5. The Fourth Stall by Chris Rylander. Fiction. Described as "'Diary of  Wimpy Kid' meets "The Sopranos,'" this book focuses on Mac, who can get you anything you need—just ask for him in the boys' bathroom, fourth stall from the high window.
