The Weston Board of Selectmen met Tuesday night to discuss, among other topics, preparation for Town Meeting in May and a plastic bottle bill that would allow consumers to pay and receive a 5-cent deposit on all plastic bottles, not just soda bottles.

TOWN MEETING PREP

The board and town manager Donna S. VanderClock discussed holding at least one session before Town Meeting that would allow the public to learn more about some of the warrant articles coming up, like a zoning bylaw change and an article to begin an affordable housing trust.

Selectman Michael Harrity said public outreach about warrant articles and other changes to town bylaws or rules was an ongoing issue, citing low attendance at many public meetings.

"The problem is—you just don't know if  you're getting all the feedback," he said.

VanderClock said she'll be putting together a brief document summarizing some of the warrant articles that will go in the next tax bill.

PLAN APPROVal The board approved a hazard mitigation plan that has been preliminarily approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Having a plan in place will not necessarily guarantee Weston reimbursement in a true emergency situation but will open up possiblities for some funds, said VanderClock.

The board tabled a resolution being brought to the Legislature by MASSPIRG that would allow plastic, non-soda bottles to be eligible for a 5-cent deposit. VanderClock said this could make recycling plastic bottles a better financial decision for the town.*

The board also set a date for a public open house at the new Department of Public Works building, which will be held all day on May 7.

*The original article stated the board had approved the MASSPIRG resolution. This is incorrect; the board tabled the resolution.
