Alleged Cop Killer Not Medically Fit For Arraignment, DA Says

Emanuel Lopes's scheduled arraignment will not take place Monday, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney's office.

WEYMOUTH, MA — The arraignment for Emanuel Lopes will not take place Monday as originally expected.

The Norfolk County District Attorney's office announced Monday afternoon that Lopes is not medically fit to appear at his arraignment and will not be made available. He may be ready to appear in front of a judge Tuesday but officials are not sure if the arraignment will take place at Quincy District Court or South Shore Hospital.

When he is arraigned, Lopes will be charged with murdering Officer Michael Chesna and bystander Vera Adams. Chesna was responding to a report of an erratic driver on Route 18 shortly after 7:30 a.m Sunday. He arrived to find a BMW crashed and the driver - later identified as Lopes - allegedly vandalizing a home on Burton Terrace. A police report indicates that Lopes, who was driving a BMW registered to his girlfriend's mother, crashed into a Dodge. He allegedly apologized to the driver of the Dodge and fled the scene on foot.

Chesna found Lopes standing in a side yard of a Burton Terrace home, throwing a rock into a window. After Chesna left his cruiser, Lopes allegedly threw another rock at Chesna, which caused the police officer to drop his gun. Lopes then picked up the gun and fired 10 rounds at Chesna, according to the report. Lopes struck Chesna in the head and chest.

Lopes was then shot in the leg by another officer before fleeing.
