Old South Union Church and Youth Group to Honor Outgoing Minister

A celebration is being planned for the retirement of Rev. Terry Martinson.

Since 1972, Rev. Terry Martinson has served Old South Union Church in South Weymouth. On May 19, the community, his congregation and former and current youth group members are preparing to honor him.

Kathy Sprague, who's 17-year-old twins Maggie and Derek, have been in Martinson's youth group for five years, decided to help organize a simple ceremony to  mark the minister's retirement this spring. A committee of about 15 people are working on the event, which will be held on the church grounds. Donations and volunteers are welcome, Sprague said.

Like the Sprague children, many people are familiar with Martinson through his youth group. Sprague said he takes over 500 people to an eight-day summer camp and there is still an annual waiting list.

"[The youth group] has been an amazing experience for them," Sprague said of her teens. "It's made them better people."

Sprague said Martinson makes Christianity fun an approachable for young people.

"He's not preachy and that's why it works," Sprague said.

At this time, the May event will include a short presentation, a reception with food and many opportunities for people to speak with Martinson. Sprague said they are also planning a hug line, a staple of the summer camp, for people to give Martinson a farewell hug.
