Editor's note: Weymouth Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kenneth N. Salim, sent out an email to the community on Friday responding to the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

The full text of the email follows:

Dear Parents, Guardians and Members of our School Community,

As you know by now, there was a horrific school shooting in Newtown, CT earlier today.  As each new report comes in, we all feel this tragedy of unfathomable proportions.  In our world of instant information, we cannot prevent this news from reaching our students – even many of our younger ones.

We want to reassure our entire school community that we will continue to take every possible precaution to protect our students and staff. All of our schools are locked during the school day and access is limited.  At every school, we routinely perform lockdown drills and practice evacuation procedures.  Our administrators are trained in emergency response, and our public safety partners are ready to assist whenever they are needed.

Our counseling staff is ready to assist any child, staff member, or parent who may be struggling to cope with the emotions and fears resulting from this news.  If your child needs help, we are ready to provide support.

In the difficult days ahead, please keep the children, staff, and families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School, and the entire Newtown, CT community in your thoughts and prayers.

Respectfully,

Kenneth N. Salim, Ed. D.
Superintendent of Schools
